Unshaven Webcomics: The Beardo Saga, Part One

Written on Fri, Jul 13, 2012 by Marc posted by marc

Welcome one and all to the totally-top-secret-no-longer project Unshaven Comics has been toiling over for weeks! That’s right… we’re giving a go at doing webcomics. While we can make no promises, we intend on putting out a new strip for you, our fans, once a week! And with that terrible preamble, we proudly present the first of a 3 strip arc: The Beardo Saga!

For those not in-the-know, there is (brace yourself) another south-suburban comic book maker who is thematically tied to his beard. Obviously when we found this out… we were a little… what’s the word? Oh yes, AngryAsPooBalls. Hence, we present strip one in this epic lil’ saga. Hope you dig it!

  1. I love any comic that is fueled by hatred of me and my beard. Thanks Marc, and expect my retort!

I had high hopes when I heard there was going to be a new Unshaven Comics webcomic, but I’ve been disappointed yet again. Why is no one capable of giving us the UC stories that we want, instead of this drivel? Quit reinventing the wheel, stick with what works, man.

The story starts out ok, reintroducing us to the characters, giving us a little character development, and laying the groundwork for he plot twist at the end. Which, by the way, I could see coming a mile away. The plot has very little substance overall. It just meanders around for a while before finally reaching the cliffhanger ending. Admittedly, the ending was compelling enough to make me come back next week.

I don’t want to get into all the continuity errors, but it’s clear that the writer just read the UC Universe page on Wikipedia and decided he was expert enough to write a webcomic. I will blacklist this creative team if they ret-con any of the old stories.

The art is ok, clearly inspired by John Cassaday and Steve Dillon. The occasional faux-manga effects were a nice touch.

Overall, I give this webcomic a B+. I’ll continue reading it through the first story arc, but after that, if they don’t impress me more, I’ll probably just pick up the trades. I do give them extra points for making it available digitally from day one.
